Swisscom to launch 4K TV box in 2016

Swisscom has announced that it is to expand its TV offering. A new TV box will be launched next spring with ultra-clear UHD content, a cloud-based gaming offer, brand new series and a new replay guide. With Swisscom's new TV-Box, Swisscom TV 2.0 customers will be able to watch UHD content on their own devices. The new TV box will also support High Dynamic Range (HDR) with sharper image display.

Despite higher performance, it will be smaller and more energy-efficient than its predecessor. Initially, Swisscom will be offering on-demand feature films, documentaries and series in ultra-high resolution, with the first football matches of the Swiss Super League in UHD following during the 2016/2017 season. Selected matches from major sporting events such as Euro 2016 are planned to be broadcast in this format, where possible.

Swisscom is also expanding its offering to include gaming. Customers will require an extra controller, but can play available games immediately via their TV box, without the need to download them. Swisscom partners with Gamefly, the largest provider of game-on-demand services in the US. The offer will be launched early next year, with more detailed information published at a later stage.

On 16 September, Swisscom TV will be adding brand new content to its offering called 'Hot from the US',  a service bringing the latest US series to Switzerland soon after they are first broadcast.  Swisscom TV 2.0 is also offering a French language flat rate video service called Play, which brings together Teleclub Play and Canalplay. Play will initially offer a selection of around 7,500 videos, including series, films, children’s programmes, documentaries and, as an exclusive feature, a comprehensive sports archive.
