Viettel-led JV awarded Myanmar's 4th telecoms licence

Myanmar has awarded its fourth and final nationwide telecoms licence to a consortium consisting of Vietnamese military-run operator Viettel and domestic ICT companies. The consortium won a 15-year licence to provide nationwide services, Reuters reports. The joint venture will be named Myanmar National Tele & Communications.

Myanmar National Tele & Communications will compete with existing operators Telenor Myanmar, Ooredoo Myanmar, and the joint venture between Myanmar Post and Telecom and Japan's KDDI.

Viettel was selected as the foreign partner for the consortium in March 2016, but the licence has only now been officially granted. Viettel will own a 49 percent in the Myanmar National Tele & Communications joint venture, while local companies Myanmar National Telecom and Star High will own 23 percent and 28 percent stakes, respectively. Viettel intends to invest around USD 1.5 billion in Myanmar's telecoms sector.

According to Myanmar's Minister for Transport and Communications Thant Sin Maung, the new operator "will help advance telecommunication in townships, rural mountain towns and will contribute to improving transportation, healthcare and education necessary for the people living in rural areas”.
