Ooredoo, Telenor receive Myanmar licences
Ooredoo and Telenor have finally received their mobile licences in Myanmar. The companies won the mobile licences in June last year, but the final award had been delayed as the government finalised telecommunications regulations. The licences includes spectrum in the 900MHz and 2.1GHz bands and are valid for 15 years. 

Telenor said it has already appointed a management team and initiated recruitment of employees. Currently, the company has a workforce of 150 in Myanmar, and it expects to hire 1,000 full-time employees by the end of 2014. The company plans a rapid roll-out of HSPA and LTE networks, targetign coverage for 90 percent of the around 60 million people in Myanmar within five years. Voice and data services over 2G and 3G will be commercially launched as Telenor's initial offering. 

The company targets EBITDA break-even in Myanmar within three years of the licence award. The total peak funding, defined as the licence fee plus accumulated losses until operating cash flow break-even, is expected to be around USD 1 billion. The licence fee is USD 500 million. 

Ooredoo plans to launch services within six months, serving most major cities at launch and expanding quickly elsewhere thereafter. The Qatar-based company has also started recruitment and CSR activities in Myanmar and said it plans to offer, in addition to voice and data, mobile money services, mobile health, services to support farmers and agriculture and targeted initiatives for women and young people. Ooredoo is also implementing its distribution plan, developing its market plan and has opened an o branch office in Myanmar ICT Park, Yangon.
