Sony announced at CES plans for a new VR headset for its Playstation gaming console. The PlayStation VR2 headset will be accompanied by the PlayStation VR2 Sense controller to give games a more immersive experience, with 110-degree field of view and haptic and audio feedback.
The new headset comes more than five years since Sony first launched a VR device for Playstation. Connected by a single cable to the PS5 console, the new PS VR2 will support 4K HDR and foveated rendering. On the OLED display, players can expect a resolution of 2000x2040 per eye and smooth frame rates of 90/120Hz, Sony said.
With inside-out tracking, the headset tracks the user and his/her controller through integrated cameras embedded in the VR headset. Their movements and the direction they look at are reflected in-game without the need for an external camera.
Headset feedback is a new sensory feature that amplifies the sensations of in-game actions from the player. It’s created by a single built-in motor with vibrations that add an intelligent tactile element, bringing players closer to the gameplay experience. For example, gamers can feel a character’s elevated pulse during tense moments, the rush of objects passing close to the character’s head, or the thrust of a vehicle as the character speeds forward.
Sony also announced its first game coming to PS VR2: Horizon Call of the Mountain from Guerrilla and Firesprite. This original game is being built specifically for PS VR2.
At CES, Sony also highlighted its efforts to develop movies and TV shows based on Playstation IP. PlayStation Productions is a collaboration between Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sony Interactive Entertainment. It was presented by actor Tom Holland, who stars in PlayStation Productions' film adaptation of 'Uncharted', and Neil Druckmann, co-president of games studio Naughty Dog, which developed the game.
