Videoland cuts price for 4 months in promotional campaign

RTL Netherlands' streaming service Videoland is offering new customers a discount of EUR 4 per month for four months if they sign up for the Basis or Plus plan before 25 May. This puts the price of the Basis subscription, with ads for one user, at EUR 1.99 per month, while the Plus subscription for two users including downloads and no ads costs EUR 6.99 per month for four months. The standard prices of EUR 5.99 and EUR 10.99 apply after the promotional period.

Streaming video services spend less on advertising in Q1

Streaming video services in the Netherlands spent around EUR 21 million on above-the-line advertising in the first quarter, a drop of 16 percent from a year earlier. Disney+, ESPN and Amazon Prime Video spent less, while Netflix, HBO Max and RTL's Videoland increased spending, according to the gross figures from Nielsen.

KPN introduces TV+ Soundbox

Dutch operator KPN is adding a speaker to its IPTV hardware range. The TV+ Soundbox works both as a TV receiver and a speaker, with support for Dolby Atmos and audio designed by Bang & Olufsen. TV customers can upgrade to the compact device for an extra EUR 6 per month.

Apple TV+ comes to Amazon Prime Video in Netherlands

Amazon Prime Video has started selling subscriptions to Apple TV+ in the Netherlands. The distribution deal started earlier in the US, Spain, Italy and Germany and has now expanded to more countries. As part of the launch in the Netherlands, Apple TV+ subscribers pay a reduced price of EUR 4.99 per month the first three months when signing up through Amazon, compared to a normal price of EUR 9.99. The offer runs until 24 April.

YouTube base shrinking in Netherlands as NPO, Videoland add viewers

There is a shift in ad-supported video streaming underway in the Netherlands. While YouTube is still the most popular free platform, its share of users is falling, to around 70 percent of the market in Q4 2024 compared to 80 percent a year earlier, research by Telecompaper shows. The local services NPO Start and Videoland TV Gemist are becoming more popular, with both attracting around 30 percent viewer shares in the fourth quarter of 2024, and especially Videoland showing strong growth in the past year.

The Dutch TV and video market grew by 4.2 percent in 2024, reaching EUR 2.9 billion in revenue. This increase is mainly driven by a 12 percent rise in OTT video services, resulting in revenue of EUR 1.2 billion from streaming. Within this segment, subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) achieved the highest growth, with revenue up 21 percent to over EUR 1 billion.
