FTTH in the Netherlands 2012

Telecompaper has published its sixth annual report on the Dutch FTTH market. The report describes the current state of the market with detailed information on each province. It includes our expectations for the 2012-2016 period. For this annual FTTH report, we conducted interviews with various market participants. Several major and new players are presented and there are brief discussions on a number of hot issues in the (international) broadband and FTTH markets. Reggefiber buys Rotterdam FTTH network for EUR 2 mln

Reggefiber has acquired the city of Rotterdam's FTTH network for EUR 2 million. The network in the areas Nesselande and Lloydkwartier passes 5,600 homes and has 820 customers for services. This report analyses developments in the Dutch market for broadband internet access, focusing on consumers, in the third quarter of 2012, and compares the findings with results from previous periods. The analysis is based on Telecompaper's continuous research into the development of the Dutch broadband communication services market. The focus is on cable network operators (Ziggo, UPC, Delta, Caiway) and DSL network operators (KPN, T-Mobile Online, Tele2) and FTTH connections and an estimate of mobile broadband services as well.

Reggefiber begint aanleg FTTH in Noordenveld

Reggefiber meldt dat de aanleg begonnen is van glasvezel in Roden, Norg en Peize, de drie kernen in de Drentse gemeente Noordenveld. De vraagbundeling in de gemeente werd in april afgerond. Er wordt een nieuwe techniek gebruikt voor het ingraven van het netwerk. Reggefiber legt buizen op 30 centimeter diepte onder het trottoir, met een machine die een sleuf uitborstelt in plaats van graaft. Het is de bedoeling dat zo per dag 700 meter kan worden aangelegd, waarbij de tegels dezelfde dag weer worden teruggel

Fibre may be more future-proof, but cable can't be written off

A battle is underway in the Netherlands between fibre and coax. The Netherlands is notable for nearly nationwide cable network coverage and the growing fibre footprint which is largely made up of point-to-point connections. This is an exceptional case from an international perspective, as almost nowhere else is cable so widely deployed, while most other fibre networks opt for GPON rather than a point-to-multipoint network.

Tele2 NL finally adds fibre services, at a transparent price

Tele2 Netherlands announced the launch of its services over fibre networks. Customers can sign up for a basic package and eventual add-on services from 28 August, and the services will be delivered from November. The operator will give further details on the packages on 28 August, but has already said a basic quad-play will cost EUR 42.50 per month. This includes broadband at 40/40Mbps and a Sim-only mobile plan with 100 minutes. Customers can customise the packages with extra TV channels and higher speeds.

Fibre, cable lead growth in Dutch broadband market in Q2

The Dutch broadband market grew by around 55,000 connections or 0.9 percent during the second quarter of 2012, to a total 6.49 million lines, according to Telecompaper's latest research. A 1 percent quarterly decrease in DSL connections to 3.2 million was offset by 1.3 percent growth in cable broadband connections during the quarter, to 2.9 million. Dutch consumers see fibre as the future

Around two-thirds of Dutch consumers think fibre is the broadband technology of the future, according to a study presented by Telecompaper at its Breedband 2012 conference. Growth in fibre is expected to come at the cost of DSL, which has already seen declining use for some time. Consumers find reliability most important broadband feature

Consumers are increasingly interested in broadband with speeds of over 50Mbps, according to research by Telecompaper presented by Ed Achterberg at the market researcher's Breedband 2012 conference. According to Telecompaper's consumer panel, reliability is the most important aspect of a broadband connection for consumers, while price comes second. Fibre broadband providers need to drastically reduce their prices if they want to win the battle against cable, according to Frans van Camp from XS Insights. Dutch FTTH market to grow to 3 mln lines in 2016

The Dutch FTTH market counted around 950,000 homes passed at the end of 2011. Including FTTB, the total was over 1 million. Reggefiber was by far the biggest operator, with a 96.2 percent share of the market, according to Telecompaper's latest report 'FTTH in the Netherlands 2012'.
