Western European LTE spectrum auctions speed up

This research brief is a sequel to the Western European mobile spectrum auctions and LTE developments brief published in January 2012. This brief provides an overview of the auctions held since then as well as upcoming spectrum auctions focusing on 800 MHz and 2600 MHz spectrum. It also includes regulatory decisions to open other frequencies, mostly 1800 MHz for LTE use.

The remaining countries already held their 800/2600 MHz auctions with some countries opening up other frequencies for LTE as well. The last four countries in Western Europe have auctioned 800 MHz spectrum for 4G mobile broadband services. In Austria and Norway, the auctions also included 900 MHz and 1800 MHz spectrum. Austrian spectrum auction yields EUR 2.0 billion

The Austrian telecommunications commission TKK completed the auction for the 800, 900 and 1,800 MHz frequency ranges, resulting in revenues of EUR 2.014 billion for the state. The only participants in the auction were the three Austrian mobile operators, A1 Telekom, T-Mobile Austria and 3 Austria. LTE in Western Europe: only Spain without commercial LTE

This research brief is a sequel to the Western European mobile spectrum auctions and LTE developments briefs published in January 2012 and November 2012 . This brief provides an overview of the auctions held since then as well as upcoming spectrum auctions focusing on 800 MHz and 2600 MHz spectrum. It also includes regulatory decisions to open other frequencies, mostly 1800 MHz for LTE use. The countries covered are Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK. Auctions were held in Ireland, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, auctions will be held in Finland, Norway and Austria before the end of 2013 with Belgium remaining as only country where 800 MHz spectrum's future is unclear. At the same time launches of commercial LTE services have been going in all in countries, except Spain where operators are waiting on the availability of 800 MHz spectrum as the analogue TV switch off is planned for January 2014.

TeliaSonera launched LTE roaming for its Danish customers who visit Sweden. The British 4G auction raised much less than the government hoped, with proceeds reaching only GBP 2.3 billion versus the government's estimate of GBP 3.5 billion. This is also less than the Dutch auction last December, which raised EUR 3.8 billion.

Dutch mobile auction leads to fourth MNO, quick LTE roll-out

In this Research Brief we provide an overview of the results of the Dutch multiband spectrum auction which ended on Friday 14 December 2012. This includes reactions from the winners and losers on their LTE roll-out plans and Telecompaper's expectations about post-auction developments. Telenor Denmark said its 4G network will begin commercial operations in March, later than the original January schedule. Dutch spectrum auction: no real surprises, but how aggressive will Tele2 be?

The Dutch spectrum auction ended on 14 December with total proceeds of EUR 3.80 billion for frequencies in the 800, 900, 1800, 2100 and 2600 MHz bands. KPN plans to launch in February already its first LTE offers, followed by Vodafone in the summer of 2013. Tele2 will likely be last on the market, as it must build its network from scratch. KPN also announced a sharp reduction in its dividend due to the costs of acquiring the spectrum.

Dutch spectrum agency Agentschap Telecom has published the results of the multiband spectrum auction. Four operators have acquired spectrum including existing MNOs KPN, Vodafone and T-Mobile and newcomer Tele2 Netherlands. Dutch spectrum auction to yield billions of euros - report

The Dutch multiband spectrum auction, which has been ongoing since 31 October of this year, will yield billions of euros for the Dutch state, which much more than counted on, according to Dutch commercial broadcaster RTL Z citing unnamed sources. The Dutch Multiband Auction began its 24th day on 3 December. The mobile spectrum auction started on 31 October and is taking place behind closed doors.
